How do we unite to end violence against women?

SCLC/WOMEN Inc. was founded by Dr. Evelyn Gibson Lowery in 1979 out of a passion for the issues impacting women and children, which included the violence that disproportionately affects them. The organization was created to recognize the crucial contributions of women in the civil rights movement that were often overlooked and to address their unique struggles through initiatives like their program, Pampering For Peace, which directly tackles domestic violence.

Recognizing women's contributions: The organization was formed because Dr. Lowery felt that while women's contributions to the civil rights movement were vital, they often went unacknowledged.

Addressing violence: The group was deeply concerned with issues impacting women and children, leading them to create programs to combat social ills.

Direct action: A specific initiative to address domestic violence and single parenting was the creation of the "Pampering For Peace" program, which showed a direct focus on violence against women.

Broader mission: SCLC/WOMEN Inc. also works on other issues such as youth development, leadership, and economic justice, but the effort to end violence against women was a core component of its mission from the start.
